Setback? Upset? Laugh It Off!
Laughter Really Can Be the Best Medicine
Humor lets us rise above discouragement, despair, fear, and uncertainty. When you can see your own setbacks in perspective and laugh at yourself, you no longer need to feel sorry for yourself. This helps you feel uplifted, encouraged, and enthusiastic. You can take an intolerable situation, one in which you may feel powerless, and minimize the effect that these upsets have over you by seeing them humorously and in perspective.
Your sense of humor can be actively cultivated. Here are some methods for developing a sense of humor:
- Adopt an attitude of playfulness which permits you to be silly, to laugh, to joke, to poke fun at life.
- Appreciate the many paradoxes in life. Look for the humor in the way we humans try to have others perceive us.
- Laugh at yourself and see yourself in perspective, whenever possible. Have the courage to accept your imperfections and mistakes.
- Watch for the potential humor in every life situation.
- Have fun with others. Go to films, have dinner out, play games... Most important, laugh together. As comic pianist Victor Borge put it, “Laughter is the shortest distance between two people.
When you learn to create joy, happiness, and humor in your life, you can improve your emotional state and energize your behavior. You are actively deciding your own feelings and increasing your joy and happiness.
Humor is a point of view, an attitude toward life that enables you to change your frame of reference and see any situation differently. Humor increases your range of alternatives, relieves tension and releases fear. Now, what else can you think of that’s so much fun and so good for you?
